Hey Boss!

Running a business would be a lot easier if everything went according to plan. Unfortunately, that's rarely how things work.

Customer demand changes. Expenses increase. Marketing channels stop performing. Unexpected problems appear out of nowhere.

And while you can't predict every challenge, you can make decisions today that leave your business better prepared for tomorrow.

The goal isn't to eliminate uncertainty. It's to make sure uncertainty doesn't threaten everything you've built.

Today, I'm sharing 4 decisions that protect your business when things get uncertain. Let's dive in!

“Growing a business is simple. Just figure out your offer, positioning, pricing, ads, website, SEO, email marketing, sales process, retention, and

why Gary still hasn’t paid his invoice.”

4 decisions that protect your business during uncertainty

The strongest businesses don't wait until something goes wrong to prepare for it.

1: Protect cash flow before chasing more revenue 💰

Revenue growth means very little if your business can't cover its expenses during a slowdown.

What to do:

  1. Calculate your essential monthly operating expenses and current cash runway.

  2. Build a cash reserve that can cover several months of essential expenses.

  3. Review recurring costs and eliminate spending that isn't contributing meaningful value.

2: Reduce dependence on any single customer or channel 🎯

When too much of your business depends on one thing, losing it can create serious problems.

What to do:

  1. Calculate how much revenue comes from your largest customers and acquisition channels.

  2. Identify any single source your business would struggle to operate without.

  3. Gradually diversify your customer base and acquisition channels to reduce that dependency.

3: Keep your business flexible ⚙️

The harder your business is to change, the more vulnerable it becomes when circumstances shift.

What to do:

  1. Identify fixed expenses and commitments that limit your ability to adapt.

  2. Choose flexible contracts, tools, and staffing arrangements where practical.

  3. Review your operating model quarterly to identify opportunities to simplify or adjust.

4: Make decisions based on leading indicators

Waiting until revenue drops to recognize a problem often means you've waited too long.

What to do:

  1. Identify three to five metrics that signal changes in customer demand or business performance.

  2. Review those metrics weekly to spot negative trends early.

  3. Establish specific actions you'll take when important metrics fall below acceptable levels.

Speed it up with AI

AI can help you prepare for uncertainty before it becomes a problem:

  1. Give AI your revenue, expenses, and cash reserves and ask it to model different slowdown scenarios.

  2. Feed AI your customer and acquisition data to identify dangerous dependencies.

  3. Ask AI to review your recurring expenses and suggest ways to make your cost structure more flexible.

  4. Use AI to create a simple early-warning dashboard with metrics and recommended actions when performance declines.

Great selling isn’t just making the sale, it’s giving customers a reason to come back.

Quick recap

Uncertainty is part of running a business. But being unprepared doesn't have to be.

Protect your cash flow, reduce dangerous dependencies, maintain flexibility, and pay attention to early warning signs.

These decisions might not feel as exciting as launching a new product or chasing another growth opportunity.

But they can make the difference between a business that struggles through uncertainty and one that comes out stronger.

The best time to protect your business is before it needs protecting.
